People often ask me what is the best time for them to visit Húsavík. As I happen to like every season here, there is no simple answer to this question, but pressed I would say late September or early October. During the summer months, Húsavík sees quite the number of travelers, and for a good reason. The picturesque harbor full of life, the 93 species of birds you can find at the Kaldbakstjarnir Ponds, the Puffins on the nearby Puffin Island, and the midnight sun. During the summer months, our small town feels very vibrant, like a mix of a big city and a natural reserve.
But as soon as we are into the middle of September, the town has a different beat. There are much fewer people strolling the streets and the nights start to bring my favorite phenomenon, the Aurora borealis, or simply the Northern Lights.
As the proprietor of both a hotel and a guesthouse in town, I also know first had that prices get more competitive, and so it it is easier for you to book a quality accommodation for a good price. If you plan to stay more than 2 nights in town, my advice is to contact the hotels directly for a better price.
If you are one of the adventurous and have a few days to spend in Húsavík, you should also consider months of January to March. During those months you can make an even better bargain on hotel prices. At this time of year, the weather can sometime get a bit crazy, but if you are a slow traveler and have the time to stick around for a few days, you will be rewarded with some of the most beautiful winter sights in the world.
See you soon in Húsavík.
